Midpoint Research Paper

Midpoint Research Paper

Q Instructions Part 1: For this research paper, you will write a 6 - 8 page paper (not including title page and references page) that mainly consists of four short written reflections and a virtual (or physical) tour of a four-year college campus (not Curry!). See the prompts below for each written reflection as you should start drafting these well before this paper is due. Be sure to use headers to clearly label each reflection (i.e. Written Reflection #1, Written Reflection #2, etc.). Each reflection should be approximately at least one page in length (some may be longer, but shouldn't really be less). Part 2: In addition to the four short written reflections, the research paper should have an introduction (i.e. approximately 1 page before the reflections) and conclusion (i.e. approximately 1 page after the conclusion) that addresses the following three items: Item 1) Conduct a virtual (or physical) tour of a four-year college campus of your choosing (except Curry!). You may do a "self-guided/recorded" tour online or setup a "live" session with an admissions office at the college you select. Why did you choose this college for your paper? What have you learned in the class so far that influenced your interest in choosing this college to learn more about its culture and environment? (You should answer these questions in your introduction of the paper). Item 2) On the tour, what did you learn about the physical environment (i.e. buildings, grounds, geographic location, historic buildings, signs, etc.) of the campus? What did you learn about the human environment (i.e. students, staff, faculty, athletes, alumni, etc.)? Lastly, what did you learn and observe about the college's culture (i.e. traditions, myths, rituals, sagas, history, etc.)? (You should also answer these questions in your introduction of the paper). Item 3) Conduct a short interview (i.e. 5 - 10 questions) with someone that is affiliated (i.e. student, former student, alum, faculty, staff, etc.) with the college you selected. Ask them questions about their own experience as it relates to the culture and environment of the institution. You may interview a friend, family member, or someone else--as long as they are affiliated with the school (i.e. they are an alum, they attend the school currently, they work there, etc.). (You should discuss your interview experience and findings in your conclusion of the paper). Part 3: Submit your completed paper with the introduction, four short written reflections, and conclusion all in one file here in Canvas. Instructor Note: Please be sure to add an APA style title page and a References page with 6-8 sources as well. Your 6-8 sources should be a mix of scholarly (i.e. journals, books) and popular sources (i.e. periodicals, websites, etc.). _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Written Reflection #1 -- College Cultures & Environments Based on your major or discipline you are studying, what have you learned about "culture" up to this point in your studies? What have you learned about "environments"? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Written Reflection #2 -- College Cultures & Environments How would you describe the "college" culture at Curry? Based on your own student experience, can you provide any supporting examples? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Written Reflection #3 -- College Cultures & Environments How can campus tours be influential to understanding "college" cultures and environments? And why do you think cultural artifacts are emphasized on such tours? Explain. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Written Reflection #4 -- College Cultures & Environments How would you describe the "college" environment at Curry? Based on your own student experience, can you provide any supporting examples? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Submission Instructions: Please submit one document with all of these items into Canvas by the end of the date specified (Due by 11:59pm). I chose Albany State University. It is located in the capital of Albany, New York.I wanted to look at the differences between a state university in comparison to a private school, like Curry College. My best friend Chris is entering his senior year there. I will be conducting my interview with him as well as taking a virtual tour. Founded in 1844, Albany State University continues to provide leadership in academic excellence, social change, and economic impact. University of Albany serves an increasingly diverse student body and community by offering a uniquely comprehensive array of programs, from bachelor to graduate degrees. The college is much larger than Curry, which has a population of about 4,700, Albany Is about 17,000. Another difference which is of interest to me, is Football.
